One would think it'd be Kyle Orton, Terrell Owens or Chad Ochochino that would garner headlines in the preseason opener for the Denver Broncos as they took on the Cincinnati Bengals, but that would not be the case. All of the eyes, and all of the flashbulbs zeroed in on third-string quarterback, Tim Tebow, as he played in his first NFL game. No third-stringer, maybe ever, has this much focus on them. Every pass is analyzed, every read, every run, every facial expression and every word spoken. The pressure is intense, but Tebow seems to take it all in stride.
Tebow came in on mop-up duty at the end of the third quarter, after starter Orton and current back-up Brady Quinn. He went 8-13 throwing the ball for 105 yards, but the highlight was the final play of the game. With seconds remaining Tebow scrambled right, tucked the ball, and sprinted towards the goal-line. He was met by a linebacker and safety, but bulldozed his way into the endzone. It didn't mean much, with the game already in hand by the Bengals (they ended up winning 33-24), but one has to be sure it got Tebow a lot of respect from his teammates. When many may have been satisfied to slide or throw the ball away, Tebow took off with reckless abandonment and scored on the final play of the game.
The buzz didn't stop on the playing field either, as two journalists, not from Denver, were kicked out of the Broncos locker room after the game, for of all things, trying to get an autograph from Tebow. This, as many in the journalism world know, is against the rules. One should not, ever, ask for an autograph while covering a sporting event, but the madness of Mr. Tebow is overtaking some journalists, as well. One has to wonder what will happen if one day he becomes the starter. It could be world chaos.
For now though it's his determination and fire that will take Tebow places, and if Quinn doesn't watch out it'll take him into the back-up role, sooner than later.
