Colorado Bolts for Pac-10

The landscape of college conferences is about to drastically change, and started with the University of Colorado jumping ship from the Big-12 conference to join the Pac-10.  Rumors have Nebraska potentially going to the Big Ten, and that Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State could also be making their way to the Pac-10.

Pac-10 Commissioner, Larry Scott, told SI.com, "This is the dawning of a new day for the Pac-10."  A dawning, to say the least.  This would be an incredible shift and would make the Pac-10 a super-conference, powerhouse, especially if Texas commits.  The moves, however, leave the universities of Missouri, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State in the dark, so each of those schools would have to find a conference.

This isn't any everyday occurrence either, as the last time the Pac-10 expanded was in 1978, and Colorado jumped at the chance, for if they would have waited it could have meant them looking for a conference, so the school has been really proactive in its move.  Colorado President Bruce Benson told SI.com, ""We don't like leaving people behind.  This is a better fit for us. I wish the people in the Big 12, the remaining members, a lot of luck in the future."  The Big 12 will need more than luck to stay together as it look like the conference will disappear.  One has to feel a bit sorry for Big-12 Commissioner, Dan Beebe, through this period of uncertainty.  He told SI.com, "I continue to work through the process that was agreed upon last week by our board of directors to address membership issues, and am working tirelessly towards the long-term viability of the Big 12."

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out and what decisions the rest of the Big-12 teams make.  Will they be jumping ship to the Pac-10, staying put, or heading to another conference?  Will the once mighty Big-12 survive?  Only time will tell.
