The Rockies fell to the Royals July third thanks in large part to two home runs by Melky Cabrera of the Royals. The loss puts the Rockies 2 games away from an even record they have been grinding away to get. In all they surrendered 21 hits as their pitching staff struggled to get Royals off of the bases. They gave up several big innings and were not able to put up enough offense to match an impressive 16 run performance from Royals hitters.
The loss was Jason Hammels 8thof the year to just 4 victories. The Rockies were able to get 8 runs on 8 hits themselves including 2 homeruns. Mark Ellis hit his second of the year and series while Carlos Gonzalez hit his 13th. The loss brought the Rockies overall record to 41-43 and evened their home record to 22-22.
The Royals were unstoppable on offense, however, and scored 16 runs total on 21 hits. Melky Cabrera hit two homeruns and now has 11 on the year. Eric Hosmer also hit his 6thhomerun of the year. Pitcher Blake Wood remained undefeated and is now 4-0 on the season for Kansas City. He seems to be the only pitcher having much luck for the Royals, though, as the team is just 34-50 this season.
Next for the Rockies is a series in Atlanta beginning July 4th against the Braves. The braves are 49-36 this year and have 24 of those victories at home. They will be starting Tommy Hanson who looks to get his tenth win of the year. He brings to the mound a low 2.62 earned run average. The Rockies will start Ubaldo Jimenez who is just 3.7 with a 4.35 ERA. The game will start at 7:10 PM ET at Atlanta’s Turner Field. There, the Rockies will continue to get the 500 mark they have so desperately fought to get to.
