Jimenez First to 10 MLB Wins
It was a pitching duel of Major League Baseball's best with Ubaldo Jimenez of the Colorado Rockies up against San Francisco Giant Tim Linecum, and Jimenez more than shined. Here are a bit of his numbers for the day, according to Sports Illustrated: he pitched nine scoreless innings, struck out nine batters, got win number 10, lowered his MLB best earned-run average to the unheard of 0.78, extended his career-best scoreless innings streak to 26, became the 15th pitcher since 1952 to get win 10 or more game by June 1, and was clocked throwing 99 mph several times while throwing 80 strikes.
That incredible effort brought a 4-0 victory for the Rockies. The numbers itself speak for themselves. Jimenez is having a season, already, for the books, and with 10 wins by May 31, the sky is the limit for his possible number of wins. The Major League Baseball record for wins, according to Baseball-Almanac.com, for the American League is 41 wins by New York's Jack Chesbro in 1904, and the most all-time, is held by National League pitcher, Old Hoss Radbourn, who won an astonishing 59 wins in 1884 for Providence. Jimenez, however, has a shot at the ERA record that has been held by, according to MLB.com, Ed Walsh, with an ERA of 1.82. If Jimenez continues his current domination, he'll be taking that record away from Mr. Walsh.
Jimenez, in today's game, obviously can't get to Radbourn's record, but his numbers are still beyond impressive, and he's helped had a hand in winning 10 of the 27 wins the Rockies have, and putting them only 3.5 games back of division leader San Diego Padres.
A rough estimate has Jimenez starting 24 more games this season, so it will be fun to see what number of wins he comes out with. At this pace records should beware, and awards will be plenty.
