It's not looking good for the Denver Nuggets. Many NBA sources are reporting that Carmelo Anthony has played his last game in Denver. The team, on Saturday, offered the NBA all-star a 3-year, $65 million extension, but it seems that just won't do. The sources say that Anthony is deciding to hold out and demand a trade or accept the extension and still demand a trade. Both options, for the Nuggets, mean the departure of the cornerstone of their organization for some time now.
All indications point to Anthony heading to the New York Knicks. Rumors have come up all off-season on his liking of the Knicks, and now it just seems to be a 'when' instead of an 'if' on when he'll head East. His contract with the Nuggets runs out after next season, making him a free-agent, but if the Nuggets know he won't re-sign, their only option is to trade him now to get some worth in exchange for him, instead of letting him go after next season for no compensation at all.
It'll be a heading home of sorts for Anthony, as he played at Syracuse, was born in that area, and his new wife, La La, is also from New York. It also should be noted that Anthony's mansion in Denver is also for sale, which in itself is a huge indication of his intentions to leave. This is the same thing Jay Cutler did before his trade to Chicago, so it seems another star is flowing suit, and will head out of town.
It will be a huge loss for the Nuggets and it'll be interesting to see what, if anything, they'll get in exchange for the forward. There will be some big shoes in Denver to fill next season, that is for sure.
